Such a beautiful and haunting tale... I have read so many books over the years. This trilogy stands out as some of the best writing I have had the pleasure to read. Katherine Arden's Russia is gorgeously described and deeply felt. Her heroine is brave, young, wise and foolish...it is a pleasure to grow with her and sometimes so painful that one forgets this is fiction. She started out as a young girl living with her family in the forest, foraging for mushrooms and sleeping on the oven at night. By the end of the trilogy she has become a strong woman with incredible powers, an intelligence beyond her years and she is a major force behind the war that takes place at the end of the book. It was a fabulous journey with Vasya and Morozko and Sasha and Medved, even with Constantin. Her relationship with all these men take different paths and require different strengths.As I read the sentences I could see the magic, see the midnight forest, hear the thunder of battle, smell the blood, feel the pain. Arden is an exceptional writer and she has created an exceptional series. If you want a story full of chyerti both lovable and infuriating, and magic so deep and ancient, and characters you hate to say goodbye to, then pick up the first book, The Bear and the Nightingale. This was an absolute joy to read. I cannot wait for more from this incredible woman.
